Dress for Success – Men

Wardrobe and Makeup-Men

Best Advice: Keep it Simple.   The key to wardrobe is to be non-distracting. Nothing should distract anyone from what you are saying.

Medium and light colors are more friendly and informal. Dark colors (charcoal gray, navy) project more authority, but remember, black can be too overpowering and brown is not very impressive.

Stay away from polyester, it’s too shiny.

Wool blend suits are the best.

Suits can have a soft plaid or slightly textured fabric.

Wide pinstripes can be risky on suits/shirts.

Wear suits when they’re appropriate. Sometimes a shirt and a tie are better. You can get more casual. It’s important to evaluate the setting

Shirts can have either a button-down or a straight collar.

Long sleeves are best, unless it’s a casual or outdoor setting.

Plain shirts are best. Colors to consider are light blue, pale pink, pale yellow, pearl gray. Try to stay away from white, it’s reflective.

Choose ties with simple patterns or stripes that contrast the suit and knot them smoothly.  Plain ties without design are also nice.

Striped ties are great but no more than four colors in the pattern. Small and medium sized patterns are okay and small paisleys in a club pattern are fine.

Bright and light colored ties work best to complement a dark suit. Colors to consider are red, yellow, pink, mauve, and light blue.

The end of your tie should touch your belt buckle.

Bring several ties with you, you might be able to test them on camera (if the program is being pre-taped or is a studio production.)

The length of the shirtsleeve should extend between ¼” to ½” from the jacket sleeve.

Make sure your lapel and shoulder seams are smooth, or you’ll look sloppy!

Your shirt needs to stay tucked in easily. Don’t let your shirt be too tight or too baggy.

When it comes to belt buckles, wear a well-made leather belt that matches the rest of your wardrobe.

The camera focuses on the beard more than the human eye does. Shave as closely as possible before going on camera.

If the shoot is scheduled later in the day, be sure to have a razor on hand.

Men should wear makeup in studio settings. At the very least, powder will reduce shine. Makeup evens out your skin tone and gives a more natural look than no makeup at all. FYI  all news anchors wear makeup (women/men!)

THE GOLDEN RULE OF MAKEUP IS LESS IS BEST!  Generally,  men just use powder so they don’t shine.

Generally a liquid or cream base applied with a damp makeup sponge followed with an oil-free translucent powder applied with a brush or a large puff gives the best results.

A liquid or cream concealer helps hide circles or puffiness under the eyes.

Hairstyles should be controlled, professional and consistent. Classic, yet contemporary looks best. Don’t get a new haircut before taping.
