Dress for Success – Women

Wardrobe and Makeup-Women

Best Advice: Keep it Simple.  The key to wardrobe is to be non-distracting. Nothing should distract anyone from what you are saying.

The style of clothes should be simple and classic.  Solids work the best because they are easy to mix and match and you don’t have to worry about what they will do on camera.  Patterns appear too busy on camera.  Stripes can be good if they’re not too overpowering.

Dress to suit your job or the occasion, such as a rally.

Jackets aren’t a necessity.  A tailored dress, nice blouse with accessories, dressy sweater/skirt coordinates all can look professional on their own or with a jacket.  Long sleeves look better than short.

Stay away from bows and lace.  They take away credibility and professionalism.

Colors: stay away from white and black.  White is reflective and if worn it should not be the main clothing.  Off white is better.  Warm colors such as yellow and orange add warmth.  Blue shades communicate calmness.

Wear colors you like, you will feel more comfortable.  Generally blue and red are the colors that come across best on camera.  Other good colors: Cream, Coral Pink, Turquoise, Gray, Violet, Beige and Taupe.

Accessories: Simple scarves are good for adding color and variety to simple blouses and sweaters.  Jewelry should be classic styles in gold, or silver. Simple pearls are fine.  Earrings should not dangle and should be no larger than a nickel or a quarter at the most.  Make low key choices on bracelets, necklaces and rings.  The no dangle or jangle rule applies.  As for rings, one ring on each hand is enough.

Makeup should be used to complement and bring out features, not to hide them.  It is a good idea to wear some makeup, especially powder so you don’t shine.

Use a matte finish for all makeup including eye shadow (not frosts). Blend foundation and blush thoroughly. Use eyeliner and mascara on upper and lower lashes. Lip liner defines lips for contour before lipstick is applied. Use oil-free translucent powder applied with a brush or large puff for best results.

Wear colors and use techniques that look natural and are not distracting.

Hairstyle should be controlled, professional, and consistent. Keep it out of your eyes!
