March 2020 News Census

Florida Nonprofits hosted a workshop led by Margaret Sanchez of Naleo Educational Fund on February 20 at which 14 nonprofit professionals became census ambassadors. Undercounting in the previous census (2010) cost Floridians more than $65 million a year. It is critical that Florida does better in 2020. Nonprofits must encourage everyone to fully participate in this census.

More than $675 billion in federal funding flows to states and local communities each year based on census data. In addition, disaster recovery efforts and the number of Congressional representatives for each state rely on census data. If nonprofits do not take up the cause of increasing participation, Florida may once again lose millions in funding every year, not have fair representation in Congress and invite poor disaster response.

Nonprofits can lead by assuring that everyone knows that, by law, the data provided to the census may only be used for statistical purposes. In fact, the law states that census responses cannot be used against anyone by any court or government agency.

Data will not be shared with:

¨ law enforcement

¨ their landlord

¨ Immigration

community and state get their fair share of funding.
