New Resources for Extraordinary Times

During these uncertain times, it is more important than ever to always know the source of information and use only trusted, reliable sites like Candid, Florida Nonprofits and Independent Sector. Be even more wary of clicking on unfamiliar links, and only download content from verified sources. Cybercriminals are exploiting the current situation, in fact, research teams have found that domains related to coronavirus are 50% more likely to be malicious.

Using Google to find information can be very risky. A colleague wanted to download TeamViewer to work from home. A Google search found a cunningly-named third-party site that downloaded a virus into the machine. I needed Microsoft support and clicked on the top Google search result. After spending a great deal of time detailing the problem I was asked for a credit card, at which point I learned it was not a Microsoft site and required $47 per month for support prompting an immediate exit from the site.

In response to this need, there is a new COVID-19 Resources page on the Florida Nonprofits’ website (FANO.org) offering verified links to information and resources.

There is also a Facebook Group for sharing with and helping the nonprofit community. Organizations are invited to join and share with the group.

LAN Infotech, our technology partner, has also responded to the crisis by providing pro-bono Microsoft Teams training to nonprofits. Florida Nonprofits partnered with LAN Infotech to provide Microsoft Teams training to help the many nonprofits struggling to communicate and collaborate with their staff, board & volunteers on April 23.  More are planned.
