Fundraising through Livestreaming
(Events and Marketing)

Fundraising through livestreaming gives your organization a much wider potential audience and access to non-local funders. Money is raised for your organization by supporters and donors online in real-time.

Marc Almanzor, manager of development systems at Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), presented “Livestreaming: Putting the Fun in Fundraising” during the 14th Annual Bridge to Integrated Marketing Conference in National Harbor, Maryland, in July this year. Here are his suggestions.

Four Ways To Livestream Your Event

Livestreaming is not limited to games. According to Almanzor, there are non-gaming categories on Twitch with combined average viewers in the tens of thousands. Although getting started can be done inexpensively, learning about streaming and the streaming community, establishing contacts and cultivating relationships with streamers, and creating resources for streamers all take time.

There are four types of streaming events:

  • Do-It-Yourself (DIY) is a low-cost, passive activity that enables streamers to approach you;
  • Solo enables you to communicate with a streamer and plan timetables, objectives, and promotions;
  • A marathon relay comprises numerous streamers in various places who coordinate their schedules and “raid” the following streamer to provide continuous coverage; and,
  • Multiple streamers are also present at a special event, which typically attracts a large audience but comes at a higher expense.

Marketing through Livestreaming

Livestream fundraising offers numerous marketing options, instant donor involvement, and community building. However, depending on the manner of payment, the issue may be that donor data is not always visible or available for collection, according to Almanzor.

What is the first step? Find streamers. Start locally, possibly with student organizations, and connect with streamers at events they frequent, like conventions, or Twitch Meetups. There are teams dedicated to charity streaming, including Good4Gaming and charitystreams.org. (Charity Streams organized Bytes Over Borders (BOB) which raised $4,725 between January 25 and February 5 benefiting Doctors without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), Marc Almanzor’s organization.)

Almanzor recommended giving streamers chances to interact with one another and your group to keep them engaged with your organization. The way you initially interact with them will determine how you grow and manage them in the future, he said.

The longevity of your livestream fundraising program will be ensured by retaining the relationship, which is one of the most crucial things for streamers.
