Florida Nonprofits HISTORY
1989
- Founded by a group of nonprofit leaders as the first resource center and nonprofit service organization
- Participate in the founding of the NCNC (National Council of Nonprofit Associations)
1990
- Incorporated as a nonprofit in the State of Florida, Florida nonprofits were represented for the first time in a national arena at the first NCNA National Convention
1991
- Opened a full-time Florida Nonprofits headquarters in Miami Lakes, Marina Pavlov was appointed as CEO of Florida Nonprofits, Launched first newsletter, “Florida Nonprofit Agenda”: (now the monthly e-newsletter “WZ New” reaching 7,000 nonprofit leaders
- Florida Nonprofits' education program informs nonprofit executive and their board of vital updates current issues, including financial information, funding and advocacy needs. A first state-wide information seminar series initiated.
- Advocated for the Nonprofit Bill of Rights which was approved unanimously by both houses of the Florida Legislature including commending nonprofits in the State of Florida and stipulating that nonprofits receive due consideration for prompt payment of services, timely renewal of contracts, funding of state mandates, professional representation, multi-year support and timely notification of available government funding
- Launched cost-saving programs over the years; unemployment insurance, liability, workers compensation, dental, health insurance, technical assistance, retirement, office supplies and long-distance service continue to save Florida nonprofit organizations hundreds of thousands or dollars each year.
1992
- Initiated the opposition against the removal of nonprofits’ exemption from state sales tax in Tallahassee
- Helped nonprofits double in numbers from 1992 to 2002, public-benefit organizations grew from 4.4% to 11%. Florida Nonprofits' step-by-step program walks a nonprofit through the maze of filing a 501(c)(3) and prepares them for the legal issues involved.
1993
- Developed a financial management course that became a national model in partnership with the Accountants for the Public Interest and funded by the John D. and James L. Knight Foundation
- Led the fight against the Istook Amendment to rewrite the advocacy and freedom of speech rights of nonprofit organizations
1995 — In conjunction with Barry University, Florida Nonprofits developed the first Certification in Nonprofit Management in Florida 1996
- Led the nation in support of the Charitable Giving Relief Act, a bill supporting charitable tax relief for non-itemizing taxpayers for over 75% of Florida taxpayers
- Researched and published the first Florida Nonprofit Sector Wage and Benefit Study
- Launched an interactive website
- Created a directory of high-quality management training, consultants referrals, information clearing house and a sponsored toll-free Managers Helpline
1998
- Initiated a seven-year campaign to lessen the red tape needed for all nonprofit organization to receive state sales tax exemption
- Instituted the first annual Nonprofit Day in Tallahassee during the legislative session
1999
- Mobilized a conference around issues, intricacies and legalities of privatization of child welfare, positioning nonprofits as savvier contractors to the government
- Analyzed the economic impact of welfare reform on Florida and Florida nonprofits
- Lobbied to change healthcare reforms for nonprofits
2000 — Launched the first Nonprofit Start-up Program 2001 — Researched and presented a white paper on disaster relief to the Knight Foundation 2002
- Published information on how nonprofits may lobby and how to be effective.
- Recommended to the federal government ways to streamline the federal grant process
- Influenced the Federal Election Commission to allow nonprofit advocacy and lobbying
- Reduced the number of rules that nonprofits would have to comply with through the Sarbanes-Oaxley Act (SOX) and where compliance was mandatory, educated the nonprofits and created model policies for organizational use
2003 — Produced the grantwriting training video that was then sold by Jossey Bass Publishers 2005
- Introduced the first International NGO outreach and Technology based program in the state of Florida , to 40 mayors of small cities in Haiti. Coordinated with The Governors Advisory Committee on Haitian Affairs, Miami Dade College Homestead Campus and the city of Florida City
- Created a rural/under-served community regional conference in South Dade funded by FPL and Miami-Dade Department of Transportation
2006
- Instituted the first two-part Nonprofit Think Tank to develop the blueprint for Florida’s future
- Provided nonprofits with an opportunity to dialogue with corporate and government leaders
- Represented the state of Florida on the National Nonprofit Congress steering committee
- Provided a forum in which the sector leveraged its strengths, advocated a new agenda, formulated an outreach strategy for the international NGO’s, and acted upon professional standardization for the sector
- Researched, published and presented “Lessons in Leveraging: Best Practices Case Studies of Florida’s Municipal and Nonprofit Partnerships”.
2007
- Presented the first Social Networking Conference in partnership with Florida Direct Marketing Association
- Co-Sponsored the International Sister Cities Conference in Fort Lauderdale and initiated networking relationships with Non-Governmental-Organizations (NGOs) in Europe and South America
- Paid Homage to Florida Nonprofits' Webmaster George Fincel, Axiom Consulting who died July 2007
2008 – Began the Nonprofit Start-up classes the first Friday of every month
- Co-sponsored Economic Development Conference with Broward Co at Broward College, Davie
- Presented Certificate of Nonprofit Management to Children's Trust Agencies, graduating 22 nonprofit leaders
2009
- Funded five agencies with Marketing and Advertising Collateral though the Creatathon including Kids in Distress, Junior Achievement, MacTown, Women's Fund and Florida Memorial College
- Acted as Fiduciary Agent for six nonprofit organizations
2010
- Hosted Lawton's Heart Humanitarian Award and presented it to Dr. Barth Green of Miller School of Medicine at the University of Miami Spine Institute for his courageous and selfless work with paralysis and the Haitian Earthquake.
- Hosted Florida's Recovery Tzar Don Winstead and other leaders at the 19th Annual Nonprofit Conference
2011 - Celebrated the win of our 10-year efforts of nonprofits’ state sales tax exemption in Florida
- Conducted a four-day intensive Nonprofit Management Certificate Program in Clearwater, FL.
- Nestor Torres and Rachel Fornes were Honored with the Lawton's Heart Humanitarian Award
2012 -At a conference in Miami Beach, 25 graduates successfully completed the Sunshine Certificate in Nonprofit Management, Tuskegee Airman Charles J. Flowers was honored with the Lawton’s Heart Humanitarian Award
2013 - Partnered with Health Choice Network in Marco Island and Florida Association of Museums in Ft. Lauderdale
2014
- Moved Headquarters to Greater Fort Lauderdale Chamber of Commerce
- Nonprofit Times sponsored our "Began Meet and Greets, Teleconferences, and Breakfast" programs
2015
- Conducted a Nonprofit Management Certificate Program in Melbourne and St. Petersburg with a record number of graduates
- On Saturday, November 7, 2015, Florida Association of Nonprofits (formerly FANO) held its 25th anniversary gala celebration at the Greater Fort Lauderdale Chamber of Commerce
2016- Formalized Scholarship fund for Dr Barbara Blair Volunteer Fund, Russ Marchner Leadership fund, and Schlogle Fund for Children in Orphanages, conducted Intensive 4-day certificate in nonprofit management in Bonita Springs
2017 - 2018 Nonprofit Day is Tallahassee with Sponsor July Partnership with asea Florida Society of Association Executives
2019 - NPO day in Tallahassee, SCNM in the headquarters with Luisana and more, was fiduciary agent of Global Intuitive on human trafficking
2020 - Nonprofit Day is Tallahassee in February, Covid 19 exploded, Conducted all classes on Zoom.and Posted covid resources
2021
- 11,000 Face Sheilds were distributed to 31 organizations in March began publishing our Newsletter WZ New? Twice a month to help keep 11,000 nonprofits informed. Continued Sunshine classed on Zoom
- 2022 PPP Awards were extended to include nonprofits 501©(3)By-mpnthly Newsletter Wz New? Enters the 33 year of continued publication.
